Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited (CWTU) will host its annual TroutFest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, at the Mt. Morris Camp and Conference Center, Wautoma.

Central Wisconsin Redd Survey

Steven DeVitt Time: 9:30 – 10:00 am

Starting in 2022, DNR staff in Wild Rose began a concerted effort to document trout spawning locations in Central Wisconsin and ramped up efforts in 2023 with the help of CWTU and FVTU members. Steven, a Fisheries Habitat Technician, will be presenting the goals of the effort, the methods used, and talk about what we have learned.

Introduction to Nighttime Mousing

Myk Hranika Time: 10:15 – 10:45 am

This presentation is for anyone who has been interested in mousing but has never taken the plunge. Myk will teach everything from headlamps, hook setting, and  fly patterns that will help you catch fish.

Fly Fishing the British Isles

Tom Lager Time: 11:00 – 11:45 am

Experiences of scenic loughs and rivers, fishing methods and bugs can easily be arranged when visiting the UK. Ireland and Scotland loughs and rivers, Yorkshire Dales of the North of England and Wales offer numerous traditions.

Rigging for Lake Superior Steelhead and Migratory Fish

Seth Waters Time: 12:30 – 1:15 pm

Owner of Dark Waters Fly Shop & Guide Service in Iron River, Mich., over the last 15 year,s Seth will discuss all the fishing opportunities available for fishing the tributaries of the UP for steelhead and other migratory fish, along with gear and techniques.

The Beauty of Nature Through the Eyes of a Photographer

Bob Haase Time: 1:30 – 2:15 pm

Bob will share images and stories about his photography adventures throughout Wisconsin and beyond. No doubt you have seen many of his photographs and didn’t realize it, on Facebook, magazines, TU print materials, etc. Come see some of his amazing wildlife images, that most of us don’t have the skills, knowledge and patience to capture ourselves.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will include several angling and conservation presentations, fly-tying demonstrations including for youth, informational booths, vendors, artists, local fly shops, and much more.

“TroutFest offers something for everyone, whether you’re just getting started in fly tying or trout fishing or whether you’re an experienced angler looking to deepen your knowledge,” says Wayne Parmley, CWTU past president and event co-chair. “With our raffles and used gear sale, it’s also a great opportunity to round out your supplies and just spend time with like-minded folks equally excited for spring trout fishing.”
